I have had the same problem with bankroll management. I play poker to win money so if you are a beginner (started playing 8 months ago) you find yourself depositing and depositing each week depends on how much you are playing. I knew I needed that one tournament, that one big cash. It took me 8 months of looking the right game! Now that I have a descent bankroll, I maintain strict management. I try to take only 5% at the table.
Once in a time I play MTT but not much. I try to win short field tournaments. They have a higher buy inn but you can sattelite your way to them!!
There is an old adage which says you cannot gamble with scared money.Over the many years I have gambled I have found this to be true. So let the amount in your bankroll be dictated by that and apply the 20 /50 rule that was suggested to determine what level to play at .
Good Luck.
I have built my entire bankroll from freerolls. I think it is the prudent thing to do. On full tilt, they have a 500k play chip tourney where you can win $2. It generally is easy to cash in this.
the best way i found to keep a br going and not blowing it all is not to get to greedy......just cuz you been really hot one day doesnt mean go play a $50 sng when you on have 60 in your br. most people think they will continue to win. if your winning on a certain level why get greedy and chance your whole br.
i never deposit either but i do play freerolls when i can and i win some money in that and if i get that money up a bit i might consider withdrawning about half then keeping half for some buy ins
My golden rule is to play tournaments which are closest to 1/10 of my total balance.
If I'm losing lots, I'm obviously losing money, and thus I decrease the stakes. Not only does this slow the rate of losing, but shitty players also means I'm more likely to win.
If I'm winning lots, then oviously I'm winning money, therefore I increase the stakes. Winning means I'm pretty much in the zone and confident about my play, so I'm more likely to stand a chance at higher stakes, and also means that I can capatilise on my success.
In a nutshell, it's a pretty accurate way of measuring my current skill level, and what tournaments I can successfully play.
If I need to round some cash down or something, I'll bung it into a cash game and allow myself to play with all of it, withdrawing any money which ever gets above my original deposit.
