Post Very Long Post Warning

05.01.08 New Casino New live poker game Freeze out Tournament £100 buy-in….LONG POST WARNING

I was invited to play in this tourney by a business associate while I was in London UK on business, I had never been before to this place and as it was near to my rooms, I took the opportunity to join and reconnoiter the place before the game the night after the RECON mission, The money was not important, I didn’t want to look an idiot in front of my business associate.

So I liked the club right light, I am not a lover of bright light, card room was airy, the club staff seemed to know what they where doing, and I asked the manager, who looked at me funny if I could have a look at the poker cards, I explained I need to see them to see if I could see them with out my glass’s, i.e. I could make out a sharp image, no problem after my plea, so I then asked to look at the poker chips, he obliged, I went to the bar sussed out they sold red bull, and order a scotch and Perrier water with ice. After the drink and scanning all the blackjack players noting that 2 of them out of about 20 or so players where pros’ card counting, no worries here I try to stay away from blackjack as I am crap at it, anyway quick recon of the toilet and I was set for the game went back and got some zzz,s before my evening meetings.

The Game:

I was sat at table 4 luckily opposite the dealer, I hate sitting next to the dealer in position 1 or 10 because I can not see the players to my left or right depending on what my postion is, I find the dealer is always fidgeting, the nature of his work. I make a point after I sort my chips in a special way to me I never touch then until I going to put some of them in, I lean on the table and fold my arms, looking at every ones hands ( body part) and chill till I look at my pocket cards as late as possible.

With in 15 minutes of so I noticed that 3 players to my right where giving me a splendid display of chip tricks, some thing I never do in public, I sorted out who could play holdem, and sat playing while the blinds where small Tight/Passive/Passive/Aggressive. I won 4 or 5 pots, I only played 4 or 5 pots and The Starting chips where 6K a very reasonable starting stack for 100 quid, I new this was going to be a long night from the 112 people in the tournament and the 6K starting chips After the Terminator Scanning mode by me of every facet of the players at my table, I clocked this ring this guy was wearing, with what looked like a diamond that my wife would have been proud of, after a second look I worked out this scruffy guy had a paste ring, and didn’t worry about him again till I saw him walk when this chick hit her out draw nut flush, a bizarre piece of poker, that paid off.

After 2 hours our table got broken up and a rest was called, making way for a professional soccer stars massive cash game near the rail so other punters could be temped in, confirming my suspicions that the casino staff where right on the ball with the business. Nice piece of work Staff, could not of done it better my self.

After the rest I saw my wife walk, slightly mystified why as She was 2nd in chips with 27odd thousand chips! ( Wife says her allin with AA was called by some joker with 88 and he spiked the 8 on the turn, owell , that is POKER)

I had 18,400 blinds where 1000/2000 and was very relaxed looking around at my Business associate and His wife chit chatting to her near the rail and near the punto banco table, with no one on it. I guessed he must have gone, but I didn’t see when.

The final Hand:

I am at the DB, with AK , I see utg+3 raise pre flop 6k,

I think he is Thigh/passive/passive/passive, I have him on a big pair, I am eyeballing him, the dealer indicates for the second time , its my turn and I say I need some time to think, no probs from the table, this hand is an all stations alert and every ones interested in what the “New Boy ie Moi” is going to do I look at my stack, I thinking the only hand I am not going to get him off is AA, I sure of it, I love my hand, I look at his hands near his mouth, I know he hasn’t got AA, I pretty sure from his pulse in his neck he doesn’t want me to raise, I see the blood pumping, he’s sweating, I am thinking, I wonder is he pulling a fast one, as he got a medium pair…mrmmmm.. thinking, I think he’s got a medium pair , I look at the tournament board, the blinds are going up, I am 9 from the bubble, I say re-raise,ALLIN, I say, and pushed the clay forward,... I look at him, the disappointment flooding out of him, I now am totally convinced he’s got a medium pocket pair, he thinks and takes his time, I am sure he can not put me on any thing, and my ONE mistake was???

I took a long swig of my Water, bingo he calls and flips 77, I don’t think this is to bad, so glad not to be seeing any paint here, he’s drawing to 2 cards, I feel good about my chances,

and the flop!

2 2 T 8 4

I am walking to the bar. Had a good 5hrs and a bit live play, and not a bad meal pre tourny, And MOST of all, I learned some thing about My game, and it cost me £100 to do it.

Take care in the swamp, playwell.

very well done GT! both your playing and your story are fabulous.

good that it was a freezout and not a rebuy tournament, and you played the last hand perffectly.

i was also wondering when i entered the casino - of how likely is the fact that the dealer/the cards/some of the players were rigged, but it was untill i was dealt the first hand...
after this i started to feel better, and after 5 hands were dealt - i already felt at home.

i would like to say that in a live game, i preffair to be the one with the pair, not with the AK.
but thats just MHO.

so at what place did you eventually finish? and in what place did the missis finish?

these days on weekends i play live tournaments - usually 10-20 people are playing at two tables. the players who go out, are opening a cash table - and for them this is the "main weekend event" for the undergroung organization.

the thing i like about these tourneys, is that the players seem totally to missunderstand the purpose of a tournament, or the difference between them and cash games. this difference is even bigger when the tournament is called "freezout" - meaning, that you cant rebuy (as if it was, then it wouldnt be that different from a cash game).

at these tournaments i play extremely tight till the second/third round and with pleasure folding every hand just in order to see the guys trying to take chips from each other, or the others who just "desire" to finish the tournament and begin with the cash table asap.

there is the most stupid fact: the blinds increase every hour. its a sure win for me cause no cash player at this level of holdem, can "survive" without the feeling of - "i am in a big plus" or "i am losing big its time to regroup".

for a tournament player who swims in these marathon waters long enough it would just look funny how some of the players are suffering the long tournament hours for their buy-in, especially those ones who have already made it to the money, and therefore know their starting buy-in is secured.

after 4-5 hours of this clownaide - here i come.

for a buy-in of 50$ i can make easy 300$ and if looking at it from the ROI side, this isnt bad even for a cash player.

i'd like to ask you to post more of your experiences at your live games- even if the posts come with a warning for their long reading.

ohnestly, i preffair reading those than the short 5 of " give me the password, hi and good luck, welcome to the forum, interesting stuff here, i post for the bonus, i dont post about poker etc - posts.

thanx mate
