By the sounds of it, assuming that you're playing solid poker, you would be a good ring player. You are pushing with odds, and people with larger stacks are calling you and hitting out. One thing you have to think about in particular in tourneys is that your original chips have more implied value than the chips you stand to gain in an all in. If you lose the chips, you're out, if you double up.. you're still in it, and can bully a bit, but you still have to play well to cash. A lot of players go wrong here (in my opinion) by concentrating on their hands strength stand alone. If your hand is strong, but your opponent has few outs, push him off with a high bet, if you think he has a lot of outs, you can try to get more money in (if you have overall odds) but be prepared to fold if he hits an out. Remember, there's not just preflop, you can bet on flop turn and river, and that's where most of the profit will come from.
Also, many players make the mistake of seeing TOO MANY hands too early, when blinds are cheap.. Pay attention to the number of people in the pot, the bet size, and your odds against what you think your opponents have.
If you think you need to go back to basics, look up poker tips.

Always keep thinking, and play the game to win

    Talking who knows

IMHO, you sound like a solid player that is hitting bad beats. Sven00100 gives some good advice. Anytime that I hit a wall, that is, I think I am playing good , but shit happens, well, happens,..then I go back to the basics, and then to advanced basics, by rethinking/restudying/reapplying. Build that foundation. When something is not in level (remember, level is also variance), fix the foundation. If you feel that you are a "good" player, then just keep on doing what you have been. Running into bad beats, going card dead, is just a part of any poker players cycle. If you are still learning, fix you foundation. Learn by reading/studying. The simple fact is, know poker and the many, many, many, many ways to play it.

There will be swings, but if you play heads up (lol, I mean heads up, as in paying attention, not that form of poker called "heads-up". lol)and smart, you will win. The deal is, it takes time. How serious are you about poker? Have you invested the study time past the basics that can get anyone to the point of winning, and running into walls? Have you gotten a database, such as Poker Tracker, to really analiyze your game? Do you consistently play the best odds? And if you do, do you know what your win rate to bad beat ratio is?

I think I'm sounding like a jerk here. As if I know anything. lol. I am just ramping up on the learning curve myself. But I wonder a lot about poker and the strategies/theory. All I can really say is that the more that I study it, the more I study my own play, the more I study everyone else's play, the better I am getting. not just because I think so, but I do have poker tracker (the DataBase), and it tells me so.

    Peace out.

Always before you enter a tourney, you should check the specifics of the tourney: how much do you have chips in the beginning, how the blinds go up etc. If the blinds go up rapidly, you have to play aggressively because waiting for a great hand will take too much time and you'll lose your chips to blinds. During the tourney, you should constantly check how much your opponents have chips and how you compare to them: if I go all-in now, could they call with average cards? It is really important to notice when you are falling too much behind and you just have to take risks before it's too late.

the key to big tourney play is to be very patient... if you dont have a good hand, dont call... and always bet through when bluffing cuz if the person that is calling is going to fold they are gonna fold after the river
