Poker - Takes a moment to learn and a lifetime to master - WPT's Poker Mike Sexton summed the game up perfectly
Just because you've seen a bit of the World Series or WPT on TV does't mean your ready to go pro. Infact it probably means you have a whole load of bad ideas ready to tear through your bankroll
Playing like you see it on TV is not going to make a profitable night online or down the casino -
it's edited - heavily - make no mistake profitable poker is NOT all bet bet bet - folding endless hands doesnt make good TV so you dont see most of it
it's edited - to be exciting - you see Gus Hanson playing 72 off in late position - this isn't good poker - so how come he pulls it off - because he is a pro playing pro's - at the top of the game all the stats / probabiliy / pot odds etc are in their blood and instinctive - so they can steal a few pots off each other - if everyone is only playing premium hands a bluff can be made in the right position with just about any hand if made in the right way. Remember at WSOP final table level they're playing the players not their cards - this is a great skill to have especially against good tight agressive players (link) but it isn't going to help you against someone who doesn't respect you - or is just too much of a fish (link) to know better.
it's edited - you see hand after hand where two or three players hit good hands - just remember - even on the TV you dont see 9 players staying in till the flop - you dont see every hand going to the river - because with 10 at a table someone is gona hit something most of the time.
In a home game or online even with a great hand and betting aggressively many players will call you down with nothing or next to nothing - this is why you see and get so many bad beats (link) online.
The best piece of advice any player can follow is to read up on the game, study hard and be strict with yourself - this will give you a good solid game - then and only then can you start to get clever with your play - and even then you need to pick the right time and the right place.
