Jan 30, 2009 - The 2009 World Series of Poker Schedule has been released and Harrah’s Entertainment has announced a total of 57 events will take place during the 2009 WSOP held at the Amazon Room in the Rio from May 27 – July 15th. Registration for events will begin in late February and the WSOP will be hosting tournaments with buyins ranging from $1,000 up to the $50K HORSE event.
This year’s World Series of Poker commemorates their 40 year anniversary and to kick off the event, Harrah’s will host a $40,000 No Limit Holdem event scheduled for May 28. This tournament will award the winner not only their share of the prize pool but a commemorative gold bracelet to celebrate the milestone.
Opening weekend will commence with a special $1,000 No Limit Holdem event, which is expected to draw in as many if not more people than the 2009 Main Event itself. This is the only event in the 2009 WSOP with a buy-in of $1,000 and will guarantee a $5 million dollar prize pool.
A few other changes announced by Harrah’s include the removal of re-buy events. Due to the overwhelming concerns that re-buy events allow professional players to buy their bracelets, the company has removed these from this year’s schedule.
That being said there are some new changes and events which will take place including the addition of a 2-7 Triple Draw event, and a No Limit Holdem Triple Chance tournament. Harrah’s has once again included the Ladies and seniors events in this year’s schedule. Players will also notice that many of the $5,000 events played in the 2008 series have now been changed to $10,000 buyins and there are a total of 10 World Championship bracelets up for grabs, one in each game format.
2009 WSOP Final Table Delay
One thing that has not changed from last year’s schedule will be the final table delay. Harrah’s and ESPN recently reported that the November Nine final table delay from the 2008 World Series of Poker gained a higher than expected approval rating among their viewers. For this reason the 2009 WSOP Main Event will run from July 3rd to July 15th and will than break for 115 days where the nine final players will resume their games on November 7th to the 10th.
"Whether you play poker around the kitchen table or consider yourself a professional you will find a comfortable seat at the 2009 World Series of Poker," said Jeffrey Pollack, commissioner of the WSOP.
2009 WSOP Satellites and Qualifiers
Last year’s WSOP broke numerous records which included the number of people who participated across all events. In total there were 58,720 entries and over $180 million in cash prizes. Online poker rooms are beginning to roll out the WSOP satellites and qualifiers, and it is expected that Pokerstars and Full Tilt will once again compete to send the most players to a number of the events taking place in the 2009 WSOP. Once the WSOP satellite schedules are released we will be sure to publish them here.
