September 7, 2009 - PokerStars 2009 World Championship of Online Poker is certainly starting off with a bang. After suffering many defeating overlays in some of its regular Big Money Sundays tournaments (like the Sunday Warm-Up and the Sunday Million) Poker Stars registered so many players for the kick-off event of its 2009 WCOOP that its $1.25 million guaranteed prize pool was pushed up to $2 million!
Here are the numbers: 8,500 players registered, most (except for those who won their seats in satellites) paying the $215 buy-in; 1st prize came to over $200,000 and the top 1,350 finishers cashed.
The game was 6-handed No Limit Holdem, and it turned out to be a truly international competition with 8 different countries represented in the final 9. Ultimately it was Finnish player ChopSueyyy who prevailed, his prize coming to $234.421.82.
The other kickoff day event bolstered the precedent Event #1 had set, with U.S. online poker player Daniel Kelly beating up a field of 1,526 to win the $215 Razz event and the $53,410 grand prize that came with attached.
The PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker is reportedly the biggest online poker tournament series, by prize pool at least ($40 million this year, with $10 million to the main event winner), if not by turnout as well. And if Event #1 of the 2009 WCOOP is any indication, PokerStars has that record nailed as well.
And it's far from too late to get in on all this action yourself. You can still register for the PokerStars 2009 WCOOP if you hurry.
